Mallarmé’s poem was first published in 1897 in the magazine “Cosmopolis”, with what the author described as limited typographic research. It was the art collector and publisher Ambroise Vollard who proposed publishing it in book form with three lithographs by Odilon Redon. Five successive proofs were printed between July and November 1897, with extensive annotations by Mallarmé, whose untimely death put an end to Vollard’s publishing project. It was not until 1914 that the first edition of the poem was published by the Nouvelle revue française, without Redon’s lithographs, and in a typeface different from the Didot initially envisaged for Vollard’s edition. It also includes Mallarmé’s preface first published in the review “Cosmopolis”.
